Five Signs Your Nervous System Needs Healing (And What To Do About It)

Back to Blog·

In our hyperconnected, always-on world, nervous system dysregulation has become almost epidemic. Here are five signs that your nervous system is calling out for support — and a gentle path forward.

We talk a lot about mental health, emotional health, and physical health — but less often about nervous system health. Yet the nervous system is the very foundation upon which all other wellbeing rests. When it is dysregulated, everything else suffers.

Here are five signs that your nervous system may be asking for your attention:

1. You feel constantly "on" — wired but exhausted

This is the hallmark of a chronically activated sympathetic nervous system (the "fight or flight" branch). You feel unable to fully relax even when there is nothing objectively threatening happening. You lie in bed tired but with a racing mind. This is not a character flaw — it's a physiological state that can absolutely be shifted.

2. Small things feel overwhelming

When the nervous system is in a depleted or dysregulated state, the threshold for overwhelm drops dramatically. Things that wouldn't normally bother you suddenly feel like too much. Traffic. A difficult email. A change in plans. If this sounds familiar, your system is not broken — it's simply full.

3. You've lost the ability to feel pleasure or joy

This is sometimes called "emotional numbing" — a state in which the nervous system, having been overwhelmed for too long, begins to shut down its capacity for both positive and negative feeling. If life feels flat or grey, this is a sign worth taking seriously.

4. Your body holds tension you can't release

Chronic tension in the jaw, shoulders, chest, or abdomen is often the body storing unprocessed stress and emotion in the musculature. This is the body speaking loudly. When the nervous system is addressed, these physical holdings often begin to dissolve naturally.

5. You are easily startled, or feel a background hum of anxiety

A baseline of low-level anxiety or hyper-vigilance — the sense that something bad is about to happen even when all is well — is a classic sign of a nervous system that has learned to stay in a protective state.

What Can Help?

Healing the nervous system requires both bottom-up (body-first) and top-down (mind-first) approaches. Hypnotherapy, energy healing, and somatic work can all be profoundly effective in creating the safety and regulation the nervous system needs in order to heal.
