What Happens to Your Brain During Hypnotherapy?

Back to Blog·

Modern neuroscience is now confirming what hypnotherapists have known for decades: the hypnotic state is a real, measurable brain phenomenon — and it is profoundly useful for healing.

When I explain hypnotherapy to new clients, one of the most common reactions is a mix of curiosity and mild scepticism. They've seen stage hypnosis, they've heard the word "trance", and they're not quite sure what to make of it all.

Here's the remarkable thing: modern neuroscience has now caught up with what clinical hypnotherapists have observed for well over a century. Brain imaging studies using fMRI and EEG have shown that the hypnotic state produces measurable, consistent changes in brain activity.

What changes in the brain during hypnosis?

Several significant things happen. The anterior cingulate cortex — the part of the brain involved in processing conflict, decision-making, and what might be called the "inner critic" — shows reduced activity. This is why, in the hypnotic state, the critical faculty of the mind becomes gentler, and new ideas and suggestions can be received without the usual defensive resistance.

The default mode network, which governs our habitual thought patterns and self-referential thinking, also shifts — allowing for a kind of mental flexibility that is less available in ordinary waking consciousness. This is precisely the window through which lasting change becomes possible.

Simultaneously, activity in areas associated with focused attention increases. This is why the hypnotic state feels both deeply relaxed AND sharply focused at the same time.

What does this mean for healing?

It means that during a well-conducted hypnotherapy session, you are in a state of maximum receptivity for change — old patterns can be examined, emotional charges can be safely discharged, and new, healthier beliefs can take root.

This is why hypnotherapy can produce results in a handful of sessions that years of analytical talk therapy might not achieve. It's not magic — it's neuroscience working in your favour.
